Orange Simple Syrup
This orange simple syrup is easy to make and adds a bright, sweet citrus flavor to drinks and desserts. With just sugar, water, and fresh orange, you can quickly lift cocktails, teas, and baked treats to the next level.

It’s an easy citrus syrup recipe that comes together in about 10 minutes and instantly makes drinks like mocktails, iced tea, coffee, and even baked goods taste more delicious.
Syrup ratio
This recipe uses a classic 1:1 ratio which is equal parts sugar and water for balanced sweetness and good shelf life. Fresh orange peel and juice infuse the syrup without overpowering it.
Ingredients
- Fresh orange juice (about 2–3 oranges).
- Sugar
- Zest of 1 orange for extra brightness
Using orange juice in addition to zest creates a syrup with more body and natural acidity. The flavor tastes closer to freshly squeezed orange juice, rather than just citrus aroma. If you’re planning to use this syrup in drinks like spritzes or non-alcoholic sodas, fresh juice makes a noticeable difference.

How to make orange simple syrup
Start by juicing your oranges until you have one full cup of juice. Strain out the pulp if you for a more stable smoother syrup.
Add the orange juice and sugar to a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently as the mixture warms, allowing the sugar to dissolve completely into the juice.
Once the sugar has dissolved, lower the heat and let the syrup simmer gently for about 8 to 10 minutes. The mixture will thicken slightly and deepen in color as it cooks. Avoid boiling it hard, as high heat can dull the fresh orange flavor.
If you’re using orange zest, add it during the last few minutes of simmering.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool completely. If zest was added, strain it out before transferring the syrup to a clean jar or bottle.

Flavor notes
- Sweetness: medium, clean sugar sweetness
- Primary note: fresh orange
- Secondary note: light citrus acidity (since juice is added)
- Overall profile: bright, aromatic, and balanced – citrusy without bitterness

- Sweetening iced tea, lemonade, or sparkling water
- Brushing onto cakes, cupcakes, or pastries
- Drizzling over fruit salads, yogurt, or pancakes
- Adding to coffee drinks like orange-flavored lattes or cold brews
Storage & shelf life

For longer storage, freeze the syrup in ice cube trays and thaw as needed.
