A simple grape syrup made two ways - from fresh grapes or grape juice with white sugar and a touch of lemon. Ready in 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Grape juice method
  • 1 cup grape juice
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Fresh grapes method
  • 2 cups fresh grapes stems removed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

Juice method

  • Combine grape juice and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  • Stir continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved and the liquid is clear, about 3 to 5 minutes. Do not boil.
  • Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to a sealed jar. Refrigerate.

Fresh grapes method

  • Add grapes and water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Crush the grapes gently with the back of a spoon as they heat.
  • Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the grapes have fully released their juice and the mixture is bubbling softly.
  • Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a clean saucepan, pressing the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard solids.
  • Add sugar to the grape liquid and return to medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely and the liquid is clear.
  • Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes, then transfer to a sealed jar. Refrigerate.

Notes

Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Freeze in ice cube trays for up to 3 months.
For a thicker syrup, simmer for an additional 5 to 10 minutes after the sugar dissolves.
Concord grapes give the strongest flavor but any dark grape works.
